MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here has decided to consolidate distribution volume in the Northeast by transferring wholesale grocery business from the former Sweet Life facility in Northboro, Mass., to the former Wetterau distribution facility in Andover, Mass.
the Northeast, although she noted the company is "always looking for greater efficiencies." The Northboro facility, which supplies dry groceries to 160 customers, will be phased out gradually, with a shift of inventory beginning in August, Supervalu officials said.
Approximately 450 employees who work in the warehouse and offices will be displaced, though a still-undetermined number of new jobs will be added at the Andover facility later this summer, officials noted.
The Northboro facility, which is leased, is expected to be closed by the end of the year, they said.
Both facilities are about the same size -- 440,000 square feet at Northboro and 456,000 square feet at Andover. The consolidation of Northboro into Andover will not affect another Sweet Life distribution center in Suffield, Conn., Simmer said. That facility supplies 113 stores with dry groceries, frozen foods and perishables.
