Uber's New Membership Program Includes Grocery Discount

Delivery provider promises 5% off eligible rides and orders of food, groceries, alcohol and more. Members will get 5% off eligible grocery deliveries and no delivery fee on grocery orders of $30 or more.

San Francisco-based Uber is getting into the membership game, announcing the launch of the Uber One membership program that will offer discounts on both rides and deliveries.

For $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year ($49.99 through Nov. 29 as an introductory promotion), members can get 5% off eligible rides and 5% off restaurant delivery orders, grocery orders and more. Members also will see no delivery fees on restaurant orders of $15 or more and grocery orders of $30 or more. Uber also is promising "priority service with top-rated drivers and elevated member support" as well as exclusive access to special offers and promotions and "invite-only experiences."

"We want our customers to experience firsthand how Uber can make their every day more effortless," said Awaneesh Verma, Uber Technologies' head of membership. 

Back in July, Uber announced a 1,200-store partnership with Albertsons that was expected to more than double its on-demand grocery delivery availability by year's end. The company debuted its grocery delivery service in July 2020; that offering now is available in more than 400 cities and towns across the U.S., including New York City, Dallas, Miami, San Francisco, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.

A survey by Coresight Research last month found that nearly half of respondents said they had ordered groceries online in the past year, and of those who did, 48% had opted for rapid delivery
