Wegmans Warns Shoppers of Salmonella Risk

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets began placing automated calls Wednesday to customers who purchased Turkish Pine Nuts which have been linked to a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella involving 42 people.

Wegmans is recalling 5,000 pounds of Turkish Pine Nuts sold from bulk bins in most stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland between July 1 and Oct. 18. The recall was initiated as a result of an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The nuts have been tied to an outbreak of illness from Salmonella Enteritidis, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people or others with weakened immune systems. Otherwise healthy persons who are infected experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain 12 to 72 hours after consumption.

The recalled nuts were imported from Turkey by Sunrise Commodities of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.
