Tied for second place are Shaw's and Publix Super Markets. Wal-Mart Stores scored near the bottom and Save-A-Lot Food Stores, with no humanely labeled products, was last on the list.
The survey, conducted by The World Society for the Protection of Animals, ranked the top 25 (by annual sales) supermarkets in the country with a point system based on how many products they had labeled humane. Compared with results from a survey the organization conducted a year ago, there has been a 23% increase in such labeled products in the 200 supermarkets it surveyed in 34 states.
The 2009 survey recorded products in four categories: dairy, eggs, unprocessed meat and poultry, and processed meat and poultry (bacon, ham and hot dogs). Complete store rankings and survey results can be seen at www.EatHumane.org.
