PCC Community Markets fights food insecurity with new meals program

Affordably priced, easy-to-prepare Shared Value Meals feed up to four for under $10

Seattle food co-op PCC Community Markets on Wednesday introduced its new its Shared Values Meal program as part of the 15-store chain’s ongoing efforts to address food access across its Puget Sound market area.

Each month, PCC shoppers will have access to a Shared Values Meal priced at $9.95 that feeds up to four and can be prepped and plated in under 30 minutes. The new program aligns with the co-op’s mission to ensure that good food nourishes the communities it serves, said PCC.

“As a neighborhood grocer, we are actively working to address food insecurity in our region,” said PCC CEO and president Suzy Monford. “Introducing the Shared Values Meal program is another step in the co-op living its values; we are taking action to support our community with more affordable access to healthy, organic food.”

Each month’s Shared Values Meal will feature sustainably sourced staples and an easy-to-follow recipe. For the first meal, in July, shoppers can prepare Red Curry Vegetables with Coconut Milk over Jasmine Rice. Customers need to purchase the following recipe items together to get the deal: Field Day Organic Thai Jasmine White Rice, Field Day Organic Unsweetened Coconut Milk, Thai Kitchen Red Curry Paste and Cascadian Farm Frozen Organic California-Style Blend Vegetables.

PCC Community Markets' Shared Values Meal program is part of the 15-store chain’s ongoing efforts to address food access across its Puget Sound market area.

PCC is partnering with wholesale distributor United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) to supply some of the ingredients for the Shared Value Meals, including their private label Field Day brand.

“We are excited to have our Field Day brand participate in the first month’s recipe,” said Elena Montoya, UNFI sales director. “At Field Day our goal is to fill homes with a wide selection of value-priced non-GMO, organic products that are delicious and simple.”

“UNFI is proud to partner with PCC on their new Shared Values Meal program supporting food access within the community,” added Bekah Swan, UNFI president of Brands .

In addition to the Shared Value Meal program, PCC locations carry a wide variety of Field Day products that are priced low, certified organic and Non-GMO Project Verified, from peanut butter to pasta, oatmeal to popcorn and more.
