Fairway to carry 'affordable' GMO-free poultry

Starting Friday, Fairway Market’s 14 New York-area stores will carry Murray's Chicken bearing the "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal.

The chicken, farmed in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster countryside, will be available whole and in boneless skinless breasts, wings, thighs, chicken legs, drumsticks, split breast and boneless skinless thighs.

The chickens feed on non-GMO corn and soybeans. The feed is regularly tested, and certified by Non-GMO Project Verified, a non-profit organization.

"Fairway offers a large variety of non-GMO items so we are very pleased to add Murray's Non-GMO chickens to our selection," said Fairway CEO Herb Ruetsch in a statement. "Customers will now have a great choice for a non-GMO chicken at an affordable price."

While exact retails haven’t been released, a store associate told SN that whole chickens will sell for about $3 a pound; chicken cutlets, about $9 a pound.

"We are proud to be breaking a price barrier by offering ‘better-for-you’ non-GMO chicken without the organic price tag,” according to the Fairway blog. “This makes non-GMO chickens accessible to more of our customers, and that’s something we can get behind.”
