TROY, Mich. -- Super Kmart Centers here promoted the freshness of its meat in a recent newspaper ad, which also offered beef rump roast at $1.68 per pound.

ng to the ad, all of Super Kmart's meat is fresh-dated. Super Kmart uses USDA Choice beef, the ad said.

Super Kmart meat departments offer a one-eighth-inch trim policy to provide less fat and more meat, according to the ad. Family-packs of cuts, ground beef and poultry provide bigger savings as well. A store associate at one Houston-area unit described the family packs as large packages of steak, chicken and hamburger at a discounted price.

Michelle DeLand, a spokeswoman for Super Kmart, said the focus on freshness is not new. "From day one, we've been concerned with freshness. That's what we rely on in our [supermarket] section," she said.

Kmart operates about 70 Super Kmart Centers, which are combination supermarket and discount department stores, and about 2,000 discount department stores.
