SUNBURYS, Pa. — As expected, Weis Markets here said yesterday it has completed the acquisition of 11 Giant Markets locations in the Binghamton, N.Y. area.

“For more than 70 years, Giant Markets has excelled at being a locally focused retailer,” said Jonathan Weis, Weis Markets’ vice chairman. “We will build on these strengths and are extremely pleased to welcome nearly 1,000 former Giant Markets associates to our company.”

All 11 stores, which closed on Sunday evening for conversion to Weis, were scheduled to reopen today at 7 a.m. Weis Markets said it plans a grand opening celebration this Sunday, when five of the locations will switch to a 24-hour schedule. The stores are not affiliated with the two Giant chains operated by Ahold in the Northeast.
