Local Market, a new concept from the Jakubowski family, opened in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood at the site of a former Dominick’s. It is the first grocery store in the neighborhood since Dominick’s closed in 2013.

“This area has lacked a local, full-service grocery since Dominick’s Finer Foods closed at this location more than six years ago,” said Cezary Jakubowski, one of the storeowners in a local news report. “Everything has been purposely curated for the local community.”

The Jakubowski family are owners of six Shop & Save stores.

The 62,000-square-foot Local Market offers affordable fresh produce, a deli counter, ready-to-eat meals, a European-style bakery, a wide selection of meats and seafood and a wine bar. Locally produced items from companies such as Brown Sugar Bakery, Imani’s Original and 100-year-old family-owned Parker House Sausage will also be available in the store.

National Cooperative Bank provided a $10.4 million construction loan, part of an overall $25 million project for the acquisition of the property and the renovation of the shopping center. Local Market added 180 jobs to the community.

“For over 40 years National Cooperative Bank has served the financing needs of independent grocery retailers, bringing healthy food to underserved populations,” said Brian Misenheimer, SVP of National Cooperative. “Being a part of this transaction is a perfect example of our mission and commitment to community. We are very excited for the opening of Local Market and the impact it will have in the local area.”
