LANDOVER, Md. — As a longtime sponsor of the TV quiz show "It’s Academic," Giant Food of Landover helped the show, broadcast on NBC4 in Washington, celebrate its 50th year by hosting a reusable shopping bag design contest that awarded scholarships and is tied into an educational fund-raiser.
More than 250 students from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia submitted designs. Three students from across the region were chosen as the top prize winners.
The winning design combined key elements of "It’s Academic" with Giant Food’s logo. All designs were required to fit in a 12-by-12-inch square; incorporate Giant’s four colors (yellow, red, purple and green); include the program title; and reference the 50th anniversary.
The first-prize winner received a $1,500 scholarship. Second- and third-place winners received $750 and $500 cash scholarships.
The winning design will be printed on thousands of reusable bags, which will be sold in Giant stores across the region this spring, raising funds for Giant’s A Rewards program, which provides extensive support to participating area schools.
“As a sponsor of 'It’s Academic' since 1967, we’re proud to facilitate a forum where regional high school students can demonstrate their knowledge week after week,” said Giant spokesman Jamie Miller in a press release.
