Whole Foods Market and developer Howard Hughes Corp. announced plans to build a 50,000-square-foot flagship Whole Foods store at the Ward Village development in Honolulu. The project, which is to anchor a mixed-use development under way at the site, is slated to begin construction next year and open in 2017.

The announcement rekindles plans for a Whole Foods store at the site, located between downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. In 2009, Whole Foods canceled a lease at the site, citing construction delays related to the bankruptcy of the site’s former developer, General Growth Properties. Howard Hughes subsequently took over the project in 2010.

“As a company that has a strong commitment to caring for and supporting the local communities we serve, Whole Foods Market is pleased to officially announce our flagship Honolulu store in the vibrant community of Ward Village,” Patrick Bradley, president of Whole Foods’ Southern Pacific region, said in a statement. “As we reach six years in the Hawaii market, we look forward to serving both current and future shoppers with the addition of a Whole Foods Market at Ward Village.”

The store would be the fourth Whole Foods in the state of Hawaii, joining two other Oahu locations and a store in Maui.
