Safeway Denies Fuel Promotion’s End Tied to Suit
Safeway denied that its decision to discontinue its PowerPump fuel rewards program at most of its stores is related to a patent infringement suit filed by Excentus, Irving, Texas in June.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here denied that its decision to discontinue its PowerPump fuel rewards program at most of its stores is related to a patent infringement suit filed by Excentus, Irving, Texas in June.
“Our decision about the PowerPump program has nothing to do with the lawsuit,” said Safeway spokeswoman Teena Massingill. “We launched PowerPump a year ago when gas prices peaked. The promotion will expire on Sept. 12, and we are communicating this to customers now.”
Excentus, which provides the fuelperks! gas rewards program to a number of U.S. food retailers, announced Tuesday that Safeway ended its fuel rewards program “following a legal challenge filed by Excentus.
"We are glad that Safeway has decided to discontinue the PowerPump rewards program and its infringement of our patents without further legal action on this matter,” said Dickson Perry, president and chief executive officer, of Excentus, in a statement.
