LOUISA, Ky. — A Food City store here got into the swing of things in a big way when its parent company, K-VA-T, Abingdon, Va., revived a chainwide kids’ cake-decorating event over Mother’s Day weekend.
Cake decorator Dawn Newsome and bakery associate Melissa Holley.
In-store bakery manager Tanya Moore set tables up at the front of the store near the entrance to the produce department on Friday afternoon before Mother’s Day and also on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We set up a table that was lower so the kids could reach it easily,” Moore told SN. “We even put some boxes up there for the really little kids. We had some 2-year-olds and even younger.”
Moore was helped by cake decorator Dawn Newsome and bakery associate Melissa Holley.
“Our reasoning in setting up the decorating area where we did was that it would be seen quickly and also that moms could feel free to drop off their kids with us while they did their grocery shopping,” Moore said. “We had a great time. Some adults even decorated cakes.”
All in all, the location’s bakery team sold about 55 cakes decorated by kids. Most of the cakes were 8-inch round, single layers, with a retail of $5.99. If the customer wanted an edible image photograph incorporated in the decorating, that was an additional $5. Quarter sheets, at $14.99, were also available for decorating.
Children were given a disposable icing dispenser to decorate with, and Moore and her associates helped them with the mechanics of decorating and gave them some ideas. In the midst of the activity, displays of cakes and old photographs of moms and their families bedecked the area.
