The aquarium analyzed the Greensboro, S.C.-based retailer’s farmed and fresh caught seafood supply and made recommendations for sustainable sourcing. These assessments guided The Fresh Market in creating its new Environmentally Sustainable Seafood Policy.

The policy briefly describes the retailer’s criteria for evaluating suppliers and commits to regular reviews of its product line. It also outlines steps for sharing the policy with customers, supplier and employees.

The Fresh Market will give preference to suppliers that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and the Global Aquaculture Alliance.

“This coalition of preservation and awareness is one step toward offering our customers sustainably harvested seafood, while continuing to provide the wide selection of high-quality fresh fish and shellfish that they have come to expect from The Fresh Market,” Ross Reynolds, vice president of merchandising for meat and seafood at The Fresh Market, said in a statement.
