BOSTON — Executives from three food distributors described their companies as being at different stages of compliance to — and satisfaction with — PCI (Payment Card Industry) Data Security Standards, established by the credit card associations to protect cardholder data. The executives — Richard Bauer, chief information officer, Price Chopper Supermarkets; Glenn Kriczky, vice president of information systems, Associated Wholesalers Inc.; and Steve Methvin, director of store systems, Bi-Lo and Bruno’s Supermarkets—participated in a panel discussion yesterday on trends in supermarket technology at ERI Exchange, held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. The discussion was hosted by Michael Garry, Technology & Logistics Editor, SN. “As a Tier 1 retailer, we have a PCI deadline to meet by the end of the year, and we’re working to meet that deadline,” said Bauer. AWI’s independent retailers “have a long way to go,” said Kriczky. “It’s going to be a tough job the next few months to convince them this is important to them.” Bi-Lo/Bruno’s “has met the deadlines to date and expect to meet them,” said Methvin. But, he added, “Visa and MasterCard ignore other security risks, such as the fact that they issue credit cards that are good for years and don’t have to be reissued and don’t require a PIN.”
