HOUSTON -- Sysco Corp. here has introduced a new Supplier Diversity initiative, designed to solicit and retain the services of minority- and women-owned supply companies.

According to Richard Schnieders, company senior vice president of merchandising and multi-unit sales, qualified suppliers participating in the program will have to meet "Sysco's requirements for high-quality, reliable products and services at a competitive price."

The initiative was launched in conjunction with the broadliner's overall strategy of driving costs from the supply chain, through a process of targeted efforts at supplier consolidation.
