WARWICK, N.Y. — A Price Chopper Supermarkets store located here has been awarded Silver-Level Certification award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Partnership for reducing the use of refrigerants.

GreenChill is a voluntary program designed to reduce the use of ozone-depleting refrigerants in grocery stores across the county. The GreenChill Store Certification Awards Program recognizes retail stores that achieve at least a 50% reduction in refrigerant charge and a 75% reduction in refrigerant emissions.

“As part of our overall environmental strategy, we have made a commitment to reduce refrigerant emissions that in turn reduce greenhouse gases,” said Bill Sweet, vice president, engineering and construction Price Chopper, Schenectady, N.Y., in a statement. “The silver-level certification for the Warwick store is an acknowledgement of the fine work and environmental mindset of the associates throughout our company.”

"Customers expect their supermarkets to do what they can to take care of the environment," according to Keilly Witman, manager, EPA's GreenChill Partnership. "EPA's GreenChill certification award is proof to the public that Price Chopper's Warwick store went above and beyond the norm with its environmentally friendly refrigeration system."

In 2009, the Price Chopper store in Colonie, N.Y., was awarded the EPA’s GreenChill "Best of the Best — Best GreenChill Certified Store — 2008-2009," the highest level of GreenChill gold-level certification ever achieved by a supermarket retailer.
