Food City to Renovate Wal-Mart Site

ABINGDON, Va. — K-VA-T Foods here said Wednesday that it would open a new Food City store in Greeneville, Tenn., early next year at the site of a closed Wal-Mart store.

“We have acquired an existing retail space on Highway 11E, which we plan to completely renovate to accommodate our new state-of-the-art floor plan,” Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “The new location will provide a number of exciting new services and features for our loyal customers in the Greeneville area.”

The space is part of a former Wal-Mart store that closed when the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer built a replacement supercenter nearby. Local reports said unnamed home furnishings and apparel retailers would share the space with Food City, which is to occupy 49,500 square feet.

The new store will include a bakery/deli, complete with hot food bar and cafe; a floral boutique; and full-service seafood and meat departments including in-house butchers. In addition the store will include a drive-through Food City Pharmacy and a Food City Gas N’ Go station.
