The efforts, which made an economic impact of nearly $1 million, were published in the retailer's 2017 Volunteer Impact Report, which provides an overview of its volunteering efforts and recognizes its associates who gave back to the communities in which they live and work. Following this achievement, SpartanNash set its volunteering goal of a collective 60,000 hours for 2018.

In 2017, SpartanNash associates volunteered their time to 817 nonprofits and community partners, with 1,499 associates reporting volunteer time in 2017. They supported a variety of causes, from SpartanNash and SpartanNash Foundation partners such as Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity to local partners such as schools, churches, food pantries, shelters, community boards, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts, and many more.

“Volunteering is part of our corporate responsibility and our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve,” said Meredith Gremel, VP of corporate affairs and communications and executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation, in a news release. “Now, we’re challenging ourselves even further. From our Helping Hands days to company-sponsored blood drives to individual efforts across the company, our associates are giving back each and every day and living out our company’s vision of being a best-in-class business that feels local, where relationships matter. Plus, we’re having a lot of fun doing so, often meeting new team members or getting to know our coworkers better outside of work.”

In addition to establishing its goal of 30,000 volunteer hours, SpartanNash recognized and honored associates’ dedication to volunteering through its 100 Club program. Any associate who recorded at least 100 volunteer hours selected their favorite 501(c)(3) charity, and SpartanNash made a $100 donation in their name to that nonprofit organization. In total, 115 associates joined the 100 Club in 2017, raising an additional $11,500 in their local communities.
