Canadian food-waste-reduction app Flashfood is working its way down to the U.S. with several retail partnerships in the works.

The app, which allows shoppers to browse foods on store shelves that are approaching their "best before" date and offered at a discounted price, is working on pilots with Target and Hy-Vee, with other U.S. partnerships in the works, Flashfood Founder and CEO Josh Domingues told WGB.

Although he was not able to say which new retailers would be trying out the app at this time, he hinted that the company will be making several announcements in the coming weeks and months and is on the hunt for additional U.S. retail partners.

Flashfood is launching its pilot in three Wisconsin Hy-Vees next week and is also relaunching its Target pilot, which was available in a few Minnesota stores, after working on some technical upgrades for the retailer.

Domingues said the Target pilot has yielded "great results" thus far, selling more than 75% of food offered and while nothing is set in stone yet, Flashfood is hoping to expand to the retailer's entire U.S. footprint, with expansions taking place as early as the pilot's relaunch.

In Canada, the app is spreading rapidly with 200 new stores being turned on in the next few weeks and a full-province takeover.
