Safeway awarded for animal welfare efforts

The Humane Society of the United States has recognized Safeway for its progress in eliminating gestation crates from the pork supply chain.

The retailer recently announced it had moved its Eastern division’s fresh pork supply to group housing for breeding sows, and will require all suppliers to submit a progress report by the end of the year.

“Safeway has been a leader on tackling many of the worst farm animal abuses in food production for a decade. We believe in offering credit where credit is due, and Safeway certainly deserves some for showing the pork industry that gestation crates have no future,” Matt Prescott, food policy director for the HSUS, said in a press release.
